Something’s wrong, the house is hot, and you want to know whether this is a five-minute fix or a phone call.
These guides work backward from the symptom you’re seeing. Each one starts with the checks that take minutes and cost nothing, then walks through causes in order of how common they actually are, not how dramatic they sound. You’ll find clear markers for what’s safe to handle yourself and what needs a technician, plus rough repair costs so you know what to expect before anyone quotes you.
If your system runs but the air isn’t cold, that’s the place to start.
An AC freezing up is your system telling you one of two things: not enough warm air is reaching the evaporator coil, or there isn’t enough refrigerant in the system. It looks alarming. Ice on copper lines, frost across the indoor coil, water pooling when it melts. But the ice is a symptom, and the…
Condensation on AC vents happens for the same reason a cold glass sweats on a summer day: humid air is touching a surface cold enough to pull moisture out of it. That’s straightforward physics, not necessarily a malfunction. The question is why your indoor humidity is high enough, or your vent cold enough, for it…
AC short cycling is when your system turns on, runs briefly, shuts off, then starts again a few minutes later. Instead of steady cooling cycles of 15 to 20 minutes, you get a system that never settles. It matters more than most people realize. Compressors wear out from starting, not from running, so a system…
An AC blowing hot air is different from an AC that cools weakly. Weak cooling usually means airflow or refrigerant problems. Actively hot air means something more specific: your indoor blower is running while the outdoor unit isn’t. Air is moving through your house, but nothing is removing heat from it. Often the air feels…
An air conditioner leaking water inside your home almost always comes down to one thing: the water it normally removes from your air isn’t draining where it should. Your AC pulls several gallons of moisture out of the air on a humid day. That water collects in a pan and exits through a drain line….
An AC making noise is telling you something specific. Buzzing means one thing, clicking means another, and a metallic screech means shut it off right now. Some sounds are normal operation you’ve just started noticing. Others are a $30 part failing. A few are the sound of an expensive component destroying itself while you listen….
Your system is running. You can hear it, you can feel air at the vents, and the house is still hot. Most of the time this comes down to one of three things: a clogged filter choking airflow, a thermostat set wrong, or ice on the evaporator coil. All three are worth checking before you…
